As the old adage goes, the proof of the pudding is in the eating… and so whilst lured by Susan Green’s beautiful homemade, muslin wrapped puds, we really couldn’t wait to see what all the fuss was about!
Handmade in Heckley High House farm in rural Northumberland, desserts from ‘The Proof of the Pudding’ have gained in popularity since 2000 and have attracted the attention of HRH Price of Wales no less! To boot, the company’s famed Alnwick Rum Christmas Puds recently featured on BBC’s Countrywide Christmas Edition…There is clearly something special at work…
We tried the Christmas Pudding, Sticky Ginger Pudding, Sticky Toffee Pudding, Marmalade Sponge Pudding with Orange Liqueur and Steamed Golden Syrup Pudding. We brought in a few of our friends to help us to try the range and the opinion was unanimous.
Quality featured highly in everyone’s reviews. The gorgeous packaging doesn’t deceive and the puds once unwrapped and cooked deliver on both taste and smell. We agreed that they would make a lovely gift and would be perfect in a foodie hamper. They’re all a great size too and each pot is packed, there is no scrimping here!
The puddings are flavoursome and light with just enough punch. Not your often dry and heavy dessert of this kind. What was really striking was the lovely squidgy sound made when digging in with a spoon! These puds are packed full of tasty liquidy stuff that is completely moreish.
One of our reviewers was really keen on the Christmas Pudding (in April!). He said it took him straight back to Christmas. He would have liked just a little more of the rum flavour despite being able to taste it, but then again admitted that he was used to his wife’s vodka laced sponges, typical of her native Poland.
Another of our reviewers loved the orange marmalade pudding and enjoyed how light, citrusy and moist it was. Accompanied by a dollop of cream, this one is a real winner! This particular contributor runs an annual mince pie competition and so his review comes from a seasoned sweet treat taster!
The ginger and golden syrup puddings were also described as rich yet moist and packed with flavour. We would definitely recommend these for a homely, warming treat. The golden syrup pudding in particular received rave reviews! Sweet, light (enough to demolish one on your own…) and with a lovely crumbly texture.
We haven’t tried the Sticky Toffee Pudding yet but just look at this…We can’t wait…
The puddings are easy to cook and come with full instructions, serving suggestions and reusable container. We cooked using a variety of methods and all delivered good results.
We were lucky enough to have the puddings sent to us to try but as ever, all reviews and photographs are our own (with the help of our friends) and are true to our own experience and tastes.
